I lost my inner time-clock.

What is the time of day when you feel most energetic and productive? Ladies and gents, that is the question posed today on the NaBloPoMo prompt site.

My answer?

I don't have one.

Usually I am more mellow at night, my mind is clearer, and I feel most creative. In the morning, I may have  more energy to do things, but my mind has absolutely zero creativity. I'm definitely more task-oriented during the day.

This shows in my job - my night shifts are more productive emotionally, when I have the time to have conversations with my patients and find out things that usually serve to heal this person. During the day shifts, I am focused on getting everything done. I make sure to carve out time to have deep conversations with my folks, though, because that is how I function best.

Lake Cuyamaca, California

My absolutely favorite time of day is when the evening is coming. When the sky is a gorgeous, dusky blue. When the Moon begins to glow her light over the Earth. My spirit senses the end of the day and quiets itself, allowing her creative side to come forward with many words and pictures.

Then I have those days where the sunrise is my favorite - I love seeing the sky change colors as the Sun makes his appearance. I enjoy being swaddled in blankets, the shadows moving slowly across the window blinds, promises of a day forthcoming.  There is a silence to this part of the day as well, as people are swatting snooze buttons and rubbing sleep out of their eyes. For now, as I gaze out the window at the lightening sky, it's just me and the world.

Ah, sunrise.
My final answer: I don't think there needs to be a set time during the day where you feel most productive. Be productive when you feel most energetic. If there are various "parts" of you that require different times of day, roll with it. Don't force yourself to be creative during those early-morning hours if you're not feeling it. Don't push yourself to exercise at 9 at night if you're exhausted (that leads to injury, anyhow.)

Be you, whenever you need to be.

  1. I am definitely a morning person (which is the complete opposite of how I was as a child). I am at my best between 6 and 8 a.m.

  2. Hiya Kimberly!

Between working night shift off and on, my schedule got wonky. Now that I work primarily days, I do like that 6-8 time zone, too.

  3. I'm a night owl. I feel more awake and alive at night. Mornings I am tired and just want to sleep.
